Vision-Ease Lens, a leading eyewear lens manufacturer, encourages identifying and treating children’s eye care needs prior to back-to-school season.
RAMSEY, MINN. – Notebooks, pencils and backpacks are just a few checklist items for children heading back to school. One often overlooked item – and perhaps the most important on the list – is safe eyewear for healthy vision.
According to the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, nearly ten million children have undetected vision problems. In an effort to help parents proactively satisfy eye-care needs, Vision-Ease Lens urges parents to schedule eye screenings and pay special attention to the lens options that are available.
“Children have extremely active lifestyles. And up until age 25, they receive most of their lifetime ultraviolet exposure, making the early years the most critical for protecting children’s eyes,” said George Banyas, O.D., and optometrist at the Wal-Mart Vision Center in Gibsonia, Penn. “Identifying a child’s vision problems and treating them with the proper eyewear should be a top priority for parents.”
Because ultraviolet (UV) rays are damaging year round, wearing lenses that block 100 percent of UV rays are a must for children. However, wearing a pair of sunglasses may not always be top-of-mind as they go from both indoor to outdoor lighting throughout the school day.
Photochromic lenses, also referred to as light-responsive, protect eyes from harmful UV rays. But unlike normal lenses that stay one shade and offer little or no sun protection, light-responsive lenses darken outdoors and fade back to their clear state when brought indoors.
“Light-responsive lenses, like Vision-Ease Lens LifeRx™ lenses, have added benefits for children. They provide complete UV protection outdoors and quickly become crystal clear like standard eyewear indoors,” said Banyas. “For a child who is sensitive to wearing colored lenses, LifeRx’s fast adjustment time minimizes that concern.”
In addition to protection from the sun, polycarbonate light-responsive lenses also provide superior impact resistance and durability while remaining light and thin. These features are especially critical for children, given their demand for comfort and their need for glasses that can withstand the toughest of roughhousing.
Whether they’re spending time in the sun, playing outdoors or learning in the classroom, children benefit from the convenience and functionality of proper eyewear. And parents will rest assured knowing their children have the best eye protection for any environment.
